Tips For New DMs
…
Session 0 (Preparation & Character Design)
Session 0 can be seen in two different ways. 1, a description of your world and its mechanics for your players while they flush out their character build or 2. A combat scenario, assuming it’s later on where the characters already know each other so that your players can get a feel for how to use their character in combat and is free to make changes to spells, weapons and features before session 1 actually begins. For specific campaigns (like your Attack On Titan’s based) get them to fight your specific style of monster, otherwise literally anything out of the MM would work fine.
– Make sure you talk with your players through the storyline expectations and boundaries. (possibly safe words, you never know what may trigger someone in real life, and being able to accommodate for that is important) Remember, DnD is collaborative so you want to make sure the story is yours just as much as it is theirs, and that everyone feels safe to express themselves and role play as much as possible!
– Get your characters to already come up with reasons for joining your party. If they choose not to have a reason either give them one immediately on session 1 or pull them aside before session starts, and then roll play a scenario. (Think like the hobbits living in the shire, happily. Something must be disrupted to convince them to leave their good situation.) In your case, they need a reason to join the cadet camp.
– Have your characters do a kill count – invokes a ton of competition – especially aligns with AoT anyways.
Session 1 – Let the Story Begin!
Cadet camp was your requested start point. So it shall be.
You start your campaign in the line up of the 104th training corps. Your players are scattered amongst the lineup.
“Training is not for the faint hearted, or the weak minded. Titans breached wall Maria 5 years ago and there is nothing that stops them from doing this again! If there is even the SLIGHTEST amount of hesitation that you have towards entering Titan combat today this is your cue to leave NOW. You are solely important to keep you and your team alive. Any foul play or chance that you are unfit to assist your team and you are out!”
At this time we’re going to let your players describe themselves. Do this in whatever order you wish, but say “Let’s cut to what your players would be doing / thinking at this time. *Player*, explain your character’s appearance. What would you be doing?”
If your character’s decide to do something goofy or out of line (like eat a potato or something dumb) let the commanding officer yell at them.
Lines appropriate to this
“DO YOU THINK THIS IS FUNNY CADET?”
“YOU PUNY BRAINED FREAK HAVE NO CLUE WHAT IT’S LIKE TO ENTER REAL COMBAT”
“YOU WILL CRUMBLE LIKE THE COWARD YOU ARE”
“_________________________________________________”
Your group will have time to role play amongst themselves and gain relationships by conveniently sharing the same barracks. If you want more time for role play this way, feel free to allow meal times as aimless time – unstructured. (Unless they pull stunts, then your commanding officer will intervene.
ACTIVITIES
These will help determine the “top 10 cadets of the 104th training corps.” For comedy: roll for 11 characters total. If you have 5 players, roll 6 others in the background of the next few activities. Use basic cadet NPC stats for this as provided in the appendix. That way if one of your players has terrible luck then they may be the only one to not make it to the top 10.
For some activities they are like competitions – mark down who comes first-last on scrap paper to determine top 10.
…
Graduation Ceremony
At the end of all of these activities allow any players who rolled a Nat 20 while using their ODM gear at all during training to gain proficiency in acrobatics-while-using-the-gear and expertise if they already had proficiency.
The person who came in 1st overall gains this as well if he didn’t roll a nat 20.
It is approaching night time on one final day. There is a wonderful bonfire in the background as everyone lines up for the top 10 names to be called.
“We are proud of all who made it here tonight and put in much time and effort to be deemed ready for battle. Allow me to present the top 10 cadets of the 104th training corps. *List them in order* ”
For the sake of not splitting the party, have your group choose which regiment of the military they wish to be in, but it will not affect plot, just what items each person is given.
Survey Corps – Each will get access to a war horse, a map of the world, and their own flare gun
Garrison Regiment – Gain proficiency with guns (cannons, and rifles)
Military Police Brigade – Gain proficiency with guns, own their own rifle, and gain advantage on charisma with people in the cities.
Plot Points
Team Creation
Let your players describe where they would be after cadet training. (Taverns, barracks, in the forests, training, etc.) In the midst of wherever they are, their commanding officers and leaders all personally seek them out to hand them an official letter, ordering them to headquarters in the Trost District.
Your players (no matter their regiment) have been called into headquarters in the Trost district. (2 years before the attack by the colossal titan) They had just successfully sealed Wall Maria with the military’s new unresearched Titan Shifter.
“Thank you all for coming today. We decided we needed a special forces team to be able to call upon some of the most grueling and necessary missions in order to save humanity from such a threat.”
“Your first mission (should you choose to accept) is a scout mission outside these walls. As a trust exercise of sorts, my goal for you is to round up as many salvageable supplies as possible. The people inside Wall Rose are suffering greatly and if we don’t do something about it soon, we’ll have another massacre on our hands.”
SCOUT MISSION
You have 5 groups to make the triangle, your group is 2nd on the left.

Once they’ve made it out of the Trost district about 100ft the formation continues to their allotted cities. Your group goes into one city. They notice a bunch of RED flares go off in the other cities and one BLACK one from the city behind them. Your players notice 3. one 4M titan, one 8M titan, and one 10M crawling titan. Let your players fire off the appropriate flares and commence combat. Once done, they have 5 minutes (real life time) to raid the broken down houses and barns and silos for
– 500 salvageable food rations
– 2 Med Kits
– 5 bags of seeds
– 1 shield wedged into the ground with a half eaten skeleton under it
– A poison kit (PLOT KIT) with vials broken and a note (forgive me, my child)
– 50 gold coins (character’s choice to give to the leaders or keep for themselves)
If they take longer than 5 minutes then another 6M titan comes running out of the forest. Wisdom (Perception) DC 20 sees a purple flare go off in the far right distance. Everyone starting from the right relays a BLUE flare.
If your group is doing good on health have a 12M leaping titan come at them from the left (you have turned around so like it has been destroying everyone on the right)
The ones now on your right (originally left) can come to help if you wish. NPCs are the same as the cadet stats.
3 groups make it out alive including yours.
LEVEL PARTY UP (if this is during a session, level them up afterwards)
Back at headquarters
“I hope you all have gained a level of trust within your group. Your ability to share these rations with us has put you in great standing. You are free to work as a group and we will call upon you when needed. The general does wish to have a word with you all soon. For now, there is a local inn in Mitras that is willing to house you all for free. The safety of your group is crucial to us.” – Commanding Officer
…….
Side Quest
If your players go talk with the military within the city of Trost. Or when they try to leave Trost to enter the space of Wall Maria. They are asked by a commanding officer.
“Good morning/afternoon/evening special forces.”
“If you are not already on a timed mission by the General I have a request to ask. We are trying to take back wall maria. Recently a scout squad circled the perimeter of Wall Rose. We are aware that there seems to be some sort of breach but could not find it. In order to completely block this issue, we have decided to take back wall Maria, so we can inspect the land thoroughly. Now that the breach is sealed, we must eliminate any titan left here. Our group needs you to join the garrison regiment formation to destroy every titan within your segment. If every segment can be cleared, we can let you continue on your merry way, as we investigate the breach of the wall closer.”
“You are trying to leave wall Maria? Are you crazy? Whatever your mission is – DON’T TELL ME. You were chosen for a reason. However I really think it’s in your best interest to join this formation and ensure safe passage for everyone.”

You come across 5 3-10M Titans, and 3 Abnormal Titans
You notice the two groups near you are firing off just as many red and black flares.
IF your group does amazing, the group to your left fires off two purple flares one after another. (If your PCs chose not to kill the titan shifter earlier, they reappear. If they did kill it then it is an abnormal titan that is destroying the other group) The other titans in the area seem to be dead. Just the shifter left.
Your group can either enter back through Trost to receive thanks and a report of what happened, or continue forward towards Wall Maria.
Overarching Plot
There is a civilization deep underground (dwarves, drow etc) who are siphoning the dark magical energy and creating a serum that was sold to the religious churches (who know the true make of the walls anyways) in order to “cure humanity of its wrongdoings” by slowly changing everyone into titans.
If it was just the plot you played your story line would look like: Session 1, Team Creation, Mitras City Tavern, Ominous Mansion, Outside the Walls, General, Church of the Walls, Entering the Undercommon, Climactic Drop.
‘General’ and ‘Church of the Walls’ can come before Ominous Mansion or after Outside the Walls.
Photos and stat blocks are not ALL homebrewed by me. Just slightly tailored to your specific campaign.
